Postmodern, pre-modern, new realist, magic realist, Piddock's work has been called all these things. Idiosynctatic certainly, it delights in ignoring current fashions in contemporary art. His paintings blend fact and fiction, past and present. They sidestep the logic of the frantic succession of avantgarde styles that dominated the 20th Century and the attitude that was subsequently enshrined at the heart of the contemporary art establishment in the form of the 'Cutting Edge' and look instead for innovation within established traditions.
