Rebecca Hossack is delighted to present Urban Myths ll, in which David Piddock revisits the theme of ancient myths set in contemporary surroundings. This time, the familiar sculptural quotations of the previous series are joined by references to Old Master paintings as he continues to blend past and present, fact and fiction to great effect. David has long felt that since the avantgarde became enshrined at the heart of the contemporary art establishment, there was a better chance of finding innovation and freshness within established painting traditions. These paintings pose questions about aesthetics and cast doubt on the entire basis of Modernism. They also invite the viewer to speculate about the enigmatic and unlikely juxtapositions that they present. In a compelling personal response writer and critic, Ruth Millington, opens with an expertly chosen quotation from the WH Auden poem inspired by Bruegel’s ‘Landscape with the fall of Icarus’.
